The IHE administers the UK Highway Inspectors training and certification scheme approved by the UK Roads Board in 2010. It established the Highway Inspectors Board in 2011.
Candidates who successfully complete the courses run by an Approved Centre are eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Highway Inspectors for a period of five years. After these five years have lapsed, a refresher course will need to be completed to allow Highway Inspectors to remain on the register.

This four-day modular training course incorporates all the changes in the published code of practice, Well-managed Highway Infrastructure (2016) and is approved by the IHE Inspectors Board, as well as having the accreditation of LANTRA Awards. This two-day course is intended for local authority highway inspectors who have completed the initial highway inspectors’ course within the last five years and want to renew their qualification for a further five years. It provides a reminder of the knowledge and skills already gained on the initial course, and an update on recent changes in guidance and developments in procedures.
