The On-the-Spot accident research (OTS) project began in 2000 and is funded by the Department for Transport and the Highways Agency. It aims to ensure that our roads become safer for everyone and also contributes to the Government's Road Safety Strategy of 40% road casualty reduction target for 2010.
The actual data collection and research elements of this project are carried out by TRL in the Thames Valley region and by Loughborough University's Ergonomics and Safety Research Institute (ESRI) in Nottingham and South Nottinghamshire.
TMS provided assistance to ESRI by collecting the individual case data at the scene of the accidents and evaluated the data after collection. In addition to this TMS also provided training and advice to the researchers on highway issues such as traffic management and highway design.
