TMS has been working with 3M to provide a series of road safety seminars in Eastern European Capital Cities over the past few weeks. The seminars have taken place in Zagreb, Belgrade, Prague and Warsaw.
The above photo was taken in Prague illustrating the road sign encouraging cyclists to avoid tram tracks by cycling ahead of the tram, within the tracks.
The above photo was taken in Belgrade showing how cyclists are encouraged to reduce speed and give way at minor road crossings with the provision of barriers.
TMS Director Steve Proctor presented interactive workshops in each of the locations, looking at the topics of Safe Systems, Collision Causation, Collision Investigation, Cost Benefit Analysis, Road Safety Audit and Road Safety Inspection. The workshops were attended by Engineering staff from both local and national road authorities, academics and private sector consultants.
In addition to the workshops Steve spoke at a National Road Safety Conference in Warsaw that also involved a night time demonstration of the effectiveness of different classes of reflective sign sheeting.

Steve commented: “It was really interesting to travel to other countries in Europe and share our UK and Irish experience and to learn how road safety engineering and road safety audit is undertaken in other places. We are doing well in the UK in many aspects of road safety but there is always more to learn and many of our European partners have ideas that we could adopt which would help us to improve both our infrastructure and the way in which we deliver it".
