TMS recently carried out a Stage 3 (post-opening) Road Safety Audit of public realm improvements along The Broadway and Arnsberg Way for the London Borough of Bexley.
The scheme consists of shared space areas using high quality materials, the provision of low level median islands to help pedestrians cross the road, the provision of courtesy crossings and junction improvements, without the overuse use of traditional signs and road markings.
Audit Team Leader Harminder Aulak said,
"We were very impressed with the scheme and it certainly felt safe and friendly towards pedestrians and cyclists. The environmental enhancements have helped to create a clutter free and high quality street scene. We were particularly impressed by the improvements at the Broadway/Albion Road junction, where a notional roundabout has been created, without any signs or road markings. Even the white/grey Keep Left bollards looked good, especially at night as they featured a soft halo glowing around the edges."
