In April 2010, TMS were commissioned by the multinational company AECOM, to carry out a preliminary design safety audit on a major highway scheme in Doha, Qatar.
Qatar is currently in the process of adopting road safety audit procedures as part of the design process for major road schemes, especially as the country is experiencing rapid commercial growth. They are keen to learn international best practice from experienced organisations to help improve road safety on their highway network.
The site was visited in April/May 2010 by two experienced TMS Road Safety Auditors to gain an understanding of the area and identify safety critical areas. The detailed safety audit report is being drafted at present and will be submitted to the relevant parties.
AECOM and Qatar government are keen to carry out further road safety audits on major road schemes and develop a road safety culture amongst design teams. It is envisaged that road safety will become a core component of new road schemes for the benefit of all road users.
The completion of the audit demonstrates TMS's skill and expertise in carrying out road safety projects in culturally diverse countries. It also highlights the high calibre of the staff, who are able to carry out projects on large complex schemes.
