Road Safety - Looking to the Future (Advanced Road Safety Officers' Training)

Overview:

This is a two day residential course aimed at road safety professionals who have already attended a Phase 2 course or who have at least three years experience.

The key aim of the course is to explore how best to address the challenges and identify the opportunities for delivering road safety in the future.  Equally important, and an integral element of the course, is the importance of monitoring and evaluating our work.  Delegates will also be given the opportunity to share working practices and explore ideas with other road safety professionals.

Aims and Objectives:

This course is about getting involved, debating and developing ideas. Delegates will be active in considering solutions and working on the practicalities of delivering those solutions. Delegates are encouraged to bring examples of approaches used in their own authority - at whatever stage of development. This is an opportunity to get constructive feedback on your ideas.

Topics Covered:

Intervention based on evidence

  • Recognise how evidence determines worth
  • Undertake critical reviews of evidence
  • Apply logic mapping to the development of interventions

Evaluation - I know it works because I like it!

  • The principles underlying the design of evaluations
  • What's in the evaluation tool box?
  • Start at the beginning! - choosing and implementing an evaluation design

Managing the road environment and influencing behaviour

  • What is the relationship between the road environment and behaviour in the high risk casualty groups?
  • How do we evaluate risk when designing schemes that share street space between road users?
  • How can behavioural measures be used to evaluate schemes?

Sharing working practices

  • Peer mentoring of initiatives
  • Delegates bring a series of initiatives/ issues and work together in small groups to discuss

Threading through the key themes is the need to have a multi-faceted approach to reducing casualties.
