Delivering Road Safety in the Future

Overview:

This is a two day residential course aimed at road safety professionals who have already attended a Phase 2 course or who have at least three years experience.
The key aim of the course is to explore how best to address the challenges beyond 2010 and identify the opportunities for delivering road safety in the future.  As well as an update of current issues delegates will be given the opportunity to share working practices and explore ideas with other road safety professionals.

Aims and Objectives:

This course is about getting involved, debating and developing ideas. Delegates will be active in considering solutions and working on the practicalities of delivering those solutions. Delegates are encouraged to bring examples of approaches used in their own authority - at whatever stage of development. This is an opportunity to get constructive feedback on your ideas.

Topics Covered:

  • Intervention based on evidence
  • What evidence is available and how can it be used?
  • What does the current evidence tell us about our outstanding road safety issues for the next 10-20 years?
  • Providing results for road safety interventions
  • What sort of interventions will we need over the next 10-20 years?
  • Managing the road environment and influencing behaviour
  • How is human error taken into account?
  • What is the relationship between the road environment and behaviour in the high risk casualty groups?
  • How do we evaluate risk when designing schemes that share street space between road users?
  • Social marketing
  • What is meant by social marketing?
  • How can we use techniques like MAST to develop our road safety marketing and publicity?
  • Aligning road safety with broader community issues, what other data is available to combine with STATS-19 to assist with the analysis?
  • Sharing working practices
  • Peer mentoring of initiatives
  • Delegates bring a series of initiatives / issues and work together in small groups to discuss

Threading through the key themes is the need to have a multi-faceted approach to reducing casualties. Equally important, and an integral element of the course, is the importance of monitoring and evaluating our work.
