Road Safety Officers' training currently consists of a of a three-phase programme of continuous professional development devised by the National Staff Training Group, a working group representing the interests of both local authorities and the road safety profession.

Phase 1 -

This is the initial training that takes place within a local authority upon appointment to the profession and is completed by the unit/section manager. Normally included in induction and on-the-job training during the first six months in post. (There is no formal training course for Phase 1)

Phase 2 -

The NSTG Phase 2 - Road Safety Officer's Course is a  tailored course designed for road safety practitioners and is a one week residential course to allow delegates to appraise their work and consider other approaches. Phase 3 -

This training includes locally and nationally delivered seminars including the one day course Risk Assessment for Road Safety Practitioners and the two day course Delivering Road Safety in the Future.
