Speed Limit Signing - Law and Practice
Overview:
This one day course covers all aspects of speed limit signage. It includes legal and
practical issues for their implementation. Reference is made to the latest legislation
and Department for Transport guidance.
Aims and Objectives:
- To give delegates confidence to be able to understand the legal and practical
issues associated with signing speed restrictions
- To provide an opportunity to discuss local issues and problems.
Topics Covered:
- History and development of speed limits - types of speed limit
Delegates will be able to appreciate the way UK speed limits have developed over
time and understand the different types of speed limits in use.
- The law relating to speed limits and their signing
Delegates will be provided with a detailed overview of the current legislation relating to speed limit signage, in particular the Traffic Signs Regulations and general
Directions and The Road Traffic Regulation Act. Traffic Regulation Orders for speed
limits both permanent and temporary and their relevance to signage will be
examined in detail. The law relating to the size, position and illumination of speed
limit signs will be explained
- Current guidance on speed limit signs and road markings
Delegates will appreciate the content of the traffic signs manuals and other current
guidance with respect to speed limits
- Practical issues including examples and discussion on what can go wrong
Delegates will be able to review and discuss the application of the principles learnt in a series of practical examples.
- Speed camera signing issues
The use of speed camera signs and in particular the distinction between legal
requirements and operational rules will be explained
Certification:
Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT.
