Introduction to Traffic Calming
Overview:
This is a revised 2-day module designed to give an introduction to the essential elements of Traffic Calming schemes. After attending, delegates should have more confidence to
design a wide range of traffic calming schemes and understand many of the benefits
and pitfalls associated with these schemes. The course consists of informal short
lectures, practical workshop and discussion sessions, case studies and examples.
This module is aimed at a broad range of professionals interested in the
fundamentals of Traffic Calming from conception to implementation and monitoring.
Aims and Objectives:
- To assist delegates to understand the issues involved in designing, building and monitoring the effects of traffic calming schemes
- To provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out
their professional roles
- To provide the opportunity for delegates to network and consider alternative
methods of traffic calming
- To provide advice on delegates' own traffic calming project needs and improve
their design and implementation skills
Topics Covered:
- The Speed Problem
Delegates will:
Consider the road safety implications of vehicle speed
Understand the need to take action on reducing vehicle speeds when appropriate
Understand in broad terms the most effective methods of reducing speed and
where traffic calming fits into this hierarchy
- History and development
Delegates will:
Examine how and why traffic calming measures were developed
Recognise how strategies for traffic calming have been developed
- Legislation and Guidelines
Delegates will:
Examine the legislation and good practice guidelines concerning the planning,
design and implementation of traffic calming schemes
- Design and effectiveness of road humps, speed cushions and horizontal
measures (including workshops)
Delegates will:
Identify the different types of traffic calming measures available
Examine the optimum design features of different traffic calming measures
Undertake (in groups) a variety of traffic calming measures to solve a problem
Consider, analyse and discuss alternative solutions
- Mini-roundabouts and other traffic calming measures including workshop
Delegates will:
Examine the role of mini-roundabouts within traffic calming schemes
Determine and discuss the advantages and dis-advantages of various aspects of
mini-roundabout design
Be able to design better mini-roundabouts
- 20 mph zones and Home Zones
Delegates will:
Understand the difference between 20mph zones and 20mph speed limits
Examine the differences between Home zones and 20mph zones
Identify the legal relaxations and differences in signing, lining and lighting
requirements for 20mph zones
Understand the principles of Home Zone design
Review case studies on built schemes
- Village Traffic Calming including workshops
Delegates will:
Understand the issues involved providing traffic calming in both villages and urban environments
Examine case studies of traffic calming schemes
Undertake (in groups) the design of traffic calming schemes
Consider, analyse and discuss alternative solutions
- Problems with traffic calming schemes
Delegates will:
Examine, analyse and discuss the problems associated with traffic calming
measures and how to avoid them
Certification:
Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT.
