Design and Provision of Tactile Paving


Overview:

A one day course designed to help delegates provide for disabled road users in
accordance with the Equality Act 2010.  The course includes a
number of workshops to give delegates a better understanding of the design and
provision of tactile paving. The course is aimed at Engineers and Technicians
designing new highway / traffic schemes or carrying out improvement schemes.

 

Aims and Objectives:

  • To assist delegates to understand the issues involved in designing and installing
    tactile paving layouts
  • To  provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out
    their professional roles
  • To provide the opportunity for delegates to network and discuss tactile paving
    issues
  • To provide advice to delegates on their own projects and improve their design
    and implementation skills

 

Topics Covered:

  • The role of tactile paving in meeting the needs of disabled people
    Delegates will:
    Examine the needs of wheelchair users and visually impaired pedestrians
    Discuss the role of and need for tactile paving
  • Types of tactile paving
    Delegates will:
    Examine the different types of tactile paving
    Identify the roles of each type of tactile paving
  • Blister paving
    Delegates will:
    Examine blister paving layout principles, shapes and colour
    Examine common applications - uncontrolled crossings, controlled crossings,
    staggered crossings, pedestrian refuges, vehicle crossovers, traffic calming,
    entry treatments
    Examine the use of blister paving in conservation areas and enhancement
    schemes
  • Blister paving design workshop
    Delegates will:
    Design a number of tactile paving layouts
    Identify and discuss the issues raised
  • Corduroy paving
    Delegates will:
    Examine when corduroy tactile paving should be used
    Examine common applications - steps, ramps to LRT, Level crossings shared
    pedestrian/cycle facilities
  • Tram line and ladder paving (for segregated footway/cycle tracks)
    Delegates will:
    Examine when tram line and ladder tactile paving  should be used
    Examine common applications of the tram line and ladder paving

 

Certification:

Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT.
