Introduction to Road Safety Audit


Overview:

A 3-day Module designed to give a comprehensive introduction to Road Safety
Auditing.  Delegates will undertake a number of Audits in small groups and receive
feedback on the issues raised.  After attending, delegates should be able to
undertake Road Safety Audits more objectively and confidently.

This module is aimed at those professionals who are expected to carry out Audits,
those who commission audits, at designers whose work is audited and at those who
manage the Safety Audit process.


Aims and Objectives:

  • to give delegates a sound background to Road Safety Audits
  • to give delegates advice on safety issues related to a number of highway
    features
  • to give delegates "hands-on" experience of carrying out Road Safety Audits of
    a number of different scheme types
  • to encourage delegates to share their experiences of road safety and highway
    design  


Topics Covered:

  • Why do we need to carry out Road Safety Audits
    Delegates will understand how collisions occur on the roads and how to apply this
    knowledge in the context of Road Safety Audits.
  • What is a Road Safety Audit (RSA)?
    Delegates will understand the principles of Road Safety Audit.
  • How to carry out a Road Safety Audit and write a Road Safety Audit procedure
    Delegates will learn how Road Safety Audits are carried out according to the
    Highways Agency Standard (HD19/03) and the IHT Road Safety Audit Guidelines.
    They will be given advice on how to prepare a Road Safety Audit procedure.
  • Common problems and solutions
    Delegates will be shown a series of slides illustrating items commonly identified
    during Road Safety Audits.
  • Writing a good Road Safety report
    Delegates will understand how to write Road Safety Audit reports in the format
    detailed in the Highways Agency Standard. They will practice writing reports later in the course.
  • Checklist and control data
    Delegates will prepare their own checklists and will be given references for sources of safety control data.
  • Priority junctions
    Delegates will understand the basics of priority junction design with emphasis on 
    the main safety issues related to this junction type. Delegates will carry out a Road
    Safety Audit of a priority junction.
  • Mini-roundabouts
    Delegates will understand the basics of mini-roundabout design with emphasis on
    the main safety issues related to this junction type. Delegates will carry out a Road
    Safety Audit of a mini-roundabout.
  • Normal roundabouts
    Delegates will understand the basics of roundabout design with emphasis on the
    main safety issues related to this junction type. Delegates will carry out a Road
    Safety Audit of a normal roundabout.
  • Pedestrian/cycle crossings
    Delegates will learn about the different pedestrian crossing types and their
    respective safety issues. Delegates will carry out a Road Safety Audit of a
    pedestrian crossing.
  • Traffic signals
    Delegates will understand the basics of traffic signal design with emphasis on the
    main safety issues related to this junction type. Delegates will carry out a Road
    Safety Audit of a traffic signal junction.


Certification:

Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT.
