Introduction to assessing the need for and design of Pedestrian/Cycle Crossings

Overview:

A 1-day course providing delegates with an introduction to the issues involved in assessing the need for Pedestrian/Cycle Crossings and their design. This
module is aimed at road safety, traffic management and development control
professionals seeking to learn or improve their skills in the design of traffic signals
and pedestrian/cycle crossings. The course consists of informal short lectures,
practical workshops and discussion sessions, case studies and examples.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To assist delegates to understand the issues involved in assessing the need for designing and constructing pedestrian / cycle crossings, traffic signal junctions and improvements to signal junctions
  • To  provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out their professional roles
  • To provide the opportunity for delegates to network and consider the advantages and dis-advantages of different forms of junction
  • To provide advice to delegates on their own projects and improve their design and implementation skills

Topics Covered:

  • Assessing the need for crossings
    Delegates will:
Examine the methods of assessing the need for a controlled crossing
  • Design of pedestrian and cycle crossings
    Delegates will:
Examine the different crossing types available and when they should be used
Identify key design issues such as layout and location associated with each type
    of crossing
Identify when to use a zebra crossing or a signal controlled crossing
Compare Pelican and Puffin crossing performance
Examine combined pedestrian and cycle crossings (Toucan)
Examine common signal controlled crossing layouts
Examine further key design issues such as visibility, crossing width, provision of
guardrail, facilities for disabled road users, staggered crossings and equestrian
    crossings
  • Pedestrian Crossing Workshop 1
    Delegates will:
Draw a layout for a pedestrian crossing or visit the site of a crossing and observe
    its operation
Analyse and discuss the design features
  • Pedestrian crossing workshop 2
    Delegates will:
    Evaluate a proposed layout
    Propose changes to the design
Analyse and discuss the issues raised

Certification:

Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT.
