Introduction to Traffic Management
Overview:
A two day course designed to give an introduction to a wide range of Traffic
Management measures and processes. After attending, delegates should be able to
understand many of the statutory processes and design issues surrounding this
work area and will be able to undertake traffic management work with more
confidence.
The course offers an ideal starting point for those new to Traffic Management or
needing to gain more information in specific areas of this work.
The course consists of informal short lectures, practical workshop and
discussion sessions, case studies and examples.
Aims and Objectives:
- To assist delegates to understand the issues involved in undertaking a wide
range of traffic management work
- To provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out
their professional roles
- To provide the opportunity for delegates to network and discuss traffic
management issues
Topics Covered:
- Background to traffic management
Delegates will:
Examine and discuss the roles and responsibilities of the main bodies and
organisations involved in traffic management work
Identify important sources of information, guidance and legislation
Test and discuss their current knowledge of some common traffic management
issues
- Local Transport Whitepaper 2011/12
Delegates will:
Examine the main changes to traffic management policy and practice as a result of new government policy
Identify issues that affect their work area
- Principles of a road hierarchy
Delegates will:
Examine the principles that define road hierarchies
Identify common traffic management issues that affect their work
Analyse and discuss how and why many traffic management problems relate to
inappropriate use of a road with a particular road hierarchy
- Manual for Streets
Delegates will:
Examine the main issues in MfS and MfS2 in relation to street design and common traffic management issues
Identify new practice in these areas
- Traffic Signs Regulations & General Directions and the Traffic Signs Manual
Delegates will:
Get an insight into the above documents and how they relate to each other
Discuss some examples of common applications of these documents including
design of signs, common problems and authorisation procedures for non-
prescribed signs
Prepare a preliminary sign design for a traffic management scheme

Delegates will:
Examine the link between traffic management issues and the appearance of a street
Identify how they can reduce clutter and improve the appearance of streets
- Pedestrian facilities
Delegates will:
Examine the requirements for and basic dimensions of pedestrian facilities
Understand the relative merits, design issues and costs associated with different
types of pedestrian crossing (Zebra, Pelican, Puffin)
- Facilities for people with disabilities
Delegates will:
Identify sources of information and guidance on the provision of facilities for
people with disabilities
Examine and discuss the provision of tactile paving, dropped crossings and
audible facilities
- Cycling facilities
Delegates will:
Identify sources of information and guidance the provision of cycle facilities
Identify common problems for cyclists
Examine the design issues for on-road cycle lanes / off-road cycle tracks and
combined bus / cycle lanes
Examine cycle facilities at roundabouts, traffic signals and cycle parking
Prepare an outline design for a cycle scheme
Analyse and discuss the issues arising from the outline design
- Public Transport facilities
Delegates will:
Examine the design issues of bus lane and bus stop provision
Identify accessibility issues for public transport
Examine bus priority facilities
Prepare an outline design for a bus lane scheme
Analyse and discuss the issues arising from the outline design
- Road Safety
Delegates will:
Identify key aspects of road safety policy
Examine the current roles within local authorities/consultancies for road safety
Discuss progress against casualty reduction targets
- General Traffic Management topics
Delegates will:
Examine and discuss the use of a variety of traffic management measures such
as the use of pedestrian guardrail, vehicle activated signs, spring-back bollards, camera technology, village speed limits and Travel Plans
Identify and discuss the contents of a typical School Travel Plan
Certification:
Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT.
