Introduction to Junction Design
Overview:
A 3-day module designed to provide an understanding of the principles and practice of designing priority, traffic signal, roundabout and mini-roundabout junctions. This module is aimed at a broad range of professionals who are involved in designing or assessing the adequacy of junctions. The course consists of informal short lectures, practical workshops and discussion sessions, case studies and examples.
Aims and Objectives:
- To assist delegates to understand the issues involved in designing and constructing junctions or junction improvements
- To provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out their professional roles
- To provide the opportunity for delegates to network and consider the advantages and dis-advantages of different forms of junction
- To provide advice to delegates on their own projects and improve their design and implementation skills
Topics Covered:
- General principles of junction design and selection of junction types
Delegates will:
Examine and discuss junction design objectives
Identify factors affecting capacity and road safety
Understand the relationship between capacity, delay and queue lengths
Understand the advantages and dis-advantages of the different types of junctions available
- Priority junctions - Typical layouts
Delegates will:
Consider and discuss different standard layouts
Examine the issues to take into account when considering the layout of a junction
- Principles of priority junction design
Delegates will:
Analyse and discuss visibility distance guidelines
Identify the geometric dimensions of layouts based on design speeds and road hierarchy
