Overview:

This one-day course is designed for managers and practitioners who want to understand the extent of their potential liability for accidental injuries and other losses arising from the implementation of traffic management or road safety schemes. It provides an introduction to the English and Welsh legal system and the specific common law and statutory powers and duties of highway authorities in relation to road users. It covers recent cases that illustrate the way judges have interpreted the law in its application to public authorities, and the effective use of statutory defenses.


Aims and Objectives:

  • To examine and discuss the specific areas of law relating to the potential liability of highway authorities to prosecution and civil actions for accidental injuries and damage arising from the implementation of highway schemes.
  • To discuss the effect of recent case law on the legal duties of highway authorities towards road users.
