Advanced Road Safety Audit
Overview:
A 2-day module designed to provide a more advanced level of knowledge and
experience on the audit areas covered and more challenging workshops. This
module is aimed at practicing safety auditors who want to build on their safety audit
experience. The course consists of informal short lectures, practical workshop and
discussion sessions, case studies and examples.
Aims and Objectives:
- To give delegates a more comprehensive understanding of road safety auditing
at an advanced level
- To provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out
their professional roles
- To provide the opportunity for delegates to network and discuss more complex
issues in auditing
- To provide advice to delegates on their own audits and improve their audit skills
Topics Covered:
- Road Safety Audit Procedures and issues of concern
Delegates will:
Understand the requirements of a road safety procedure (HD19/03)
Identify issues of concern relating to audit policy and procedure
- Technical skills and competency workshop
Delegates will:
Identify and discuss the necessary technical skills and competencies necessary
to be an auditor
Examine the main technical aspects to check for a range of more advanced
aspects of audits
- Consistency of audit problem identification workshop
Delegates will:
Identify a range of issues relating to the common audit problems where different
auditors may have different views
Discuss how these issues should be handled in terms of problems identified and
recommendations
- Development Schemes - audit issues
Delegates will:
Examine common audit issues relating development schemes
Identify ways of dealing with these
- Development scheme audit workshop
Delegates will:
Undertake (as part of a team) a detailed design audit of a large development
Identify a series of audit problems and recommendations
Examine how the scheme was built
- Legal Issues
Delegates will:
Examine legal issues associated with road safety audits
Identify ways of minimising the risk of any legal actions associated with the audit
process
- Auditing major schemes
Delegates will:
Undertake ( as part of a team) a detailed design audit on a section of a major
bypass scheme
Identify a series of audit problems and recommendations
Get feedback on their findings
- Design standards and safety audit
Delegates will:
Examine the role of standards in design and audit
Consider case studies of accidents sites with departures from standard
Identify a series of common standards that relate to audit problems
- Auditing unusual / specialist features
Delegates will:
Examine and discuss a range of unusual or specialist features
Identify audit problems and recommendations
- Auditing complex junctions
Delegates will:
Examine a range of complex junction types and related safety issues
Undertake (as part of a team) an audit on a preliminary scheme proposal
Identify a series of audit problems and recommendation
Certification:
Delegates completing this course will receive a CPD certificate of attendance, recognised by both the IHE and CIHT. This course enables delegates to maintain their CPD requirements for Road Safety Audit in accordance with HD 19/03.
