A2 Maastricht

The A2 Maastricht project involves the improvement of a primary route (that forms part of the Trans-European Network) and currently runs through the city. The route suffers from heavy congestion, a poor accident record and environmental problems, as traffic has to pass through numerous at-grade junctions through an urban area.

TMS has carried out separate Safety Audits on Feasibility and Preliminary designs proposed by three different consortiums.

The schemes have involved:

• various designs of road tunnels
• grade separated junctions
• new link roads
• pedestrian and cycle paths
• environmental improvements 

The complexities of the schemes required a sound understanding of highway design and accident causation factors, as well as extensive experience of auditing major road schemes.

As part of the auditing exercise, TMS also helped to train a European delegation of road safety engineers.
