In August 2010, the Secretaries of State for Transport and for Communities wrote to Council Leaders highlighting the Government's commitment to reducing street clutter and asking them, as local leaders, to make the same commitment.
The recent Department for Transport White Paper, "Creating Growth, Cutting Carbon", states that "de-cluttering is a fundamental part of providing high quality public spaces - one where significant improvements can be achieved at relatively low cost", and calls for a reduction in the number of signs and other street clutter.
It is now formal government transport policy to encourage local councils to de-clutter our streets
Today, there is an increasing realisation that a high quality uncluttered street environment brings intrinsic value to its surrounding buildings and public open spaces and that, in turn, this can have a positive effect on commercial vibrancy and activity.
De-cluttering streets by removing inappropriate or out-of-date signing can contribute to reduced accidents and improved traffic flow.
