What are NMU Audits?

Non-Motorised User Audits are a relatively recent development in the highway engineering field. They bring together, in a single audit process, a number of audit processes for example:

  • Cycle Audit
  • Pedestrian Audit
  • Mobility or Access Audits
  • Equestrian Audit

The Highways Agency brought these together into a single audit through DMRB HD 42/05, which sets out a detailed and systematic NMU Audit process.

The facilities for NMU's within highway schemes should aim to:

  • not give rise to road safety or personal safety concerns
  • directly facilitate the desired journey without undue deviation or difficulty
  • link origins and destinations
  • be attractive and comfortable to use
  • be accessible to disabled users and people with children and pushchairs
  • be continuous and not subject to severance or fragmentation

In short, NMU Audits should be convenient, accessible, safe, comfortable and attractive.
