A report produced by the AA and road safety specialists TMS
Consultancy has won a Prince Michael Road Safety Award. It highlights road
design errors that create unnecessary danger for UK road-users.
What Goes Wrong in Highway Design identifies, among
other faults, failure to discourage high speeds at roundabouts, cycle routes
that peter out, poorly sited pedestrian crossings, and roadsigns obscured
by vegetation.
"Up to 300 road deaths a year, and many more injuries,
could be prevented if more thought were applied," says report author Dr
Steve Lawson (pictured left).
Some 9000 copies of the report have been circulated
to local authorities, highway designers and students.
