This article reviews the current trend for the removal of pedestrian guardrail. The new Department for Transport Guidance, Local Transport Note 2/09 - Pedestrian Guardrailing, is very comprehensive but the procedures suggested may be too onerous for many smaller local authorities.
The article makes a case for using road safety engineering experience and some well defined road safety principles as a more cost effective way to achieve this. Examples of where guardrail should be retained are given and a recommendation for the monitoring of casualty details at sites where it is removed is made.
