Vulnerable Road Users

Safer Routes to School, School Walking Routes & Travel Plans

TMS has extensive experience in working with Local Authorities on their Safer Routes to School initiatives. As well as working with the authorities on large safety schemes, TMS also provide training courses associated with this field of expertise. Titles include a one-day Child Road Safety Audit course and a two-day School Travel Plans/Safer Routes to School course. For more information please visit the training section of our website.

East Sussex County Council

Three schools in Eastbourne took part in a "Safer Routes to School" project. Each school had a high percentage of pupils arriving by car. 500 detailed questionnaires were analysed with the objective of identifying the main barriers to walking, cycling and using public transport to get to and from school. Measures were then identified to encourage modal shift.

Luton Borough Council

TMS have produced School Travel Plans for a number of locations in Luton.

Leicestershire County Council

TMS has carried out some 20 assessments of these routes for this authority as well as for other councils.

Dublin Corporation

TMS has also advised Dublin Corporation on ways to develop Safe Routes to School initiatives. The project involved the production of a promotional video and the preparation of supporting documents.

    Cycling Schemes

TMS has been involved in a large number of cycling schemes over the years and has worked extensively with Local Authorities to improve the safety of all types of road users.

    Hampshire County Council

TMS completed a feasibility study into the options to improve cycling facilities on the A32 in Gosport for Hampshire County Council. The detailed design of the preferred option (on road cycle lanes) was completed. TMS also monitored the effects of the measures using journey time surveys and queue length measurements. TMS also carried out a cycle audit of the Fareham to Gosport (South Hampshire) LRT proposal, prior to it going to Public Enquiry.

    Hastings Borough Council

TMS has also completed an independent review of the operation of the Promenade Cycle Route, advising the Council on changes to the route at certain locations and produced a report on the introduction of a cycling/pedestrian "Greenway" along the length of Alexandra Park.

    Lancashire County Council

TMS carried out a comprehensive study of the existing cycling facilities, most dating to the 1960's, around Skelmersdale New Town and recommended how they could be brought up to current standards and usage encouraged.

Worthing Borough Council/West Sussex County Council

In 2002 TMS was appointed by West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council to undertake further development of the Worthing section of the South Coast Cycle Route, with a view to producing a preliminary and detailed design for the scheme.

Taking into account the needs of both pedestrians and cyclists, TMS considered various options and made subsequent recommendations for each section of the route. Primarily this was with a focus to improve conditions for cyclists in the long term.

It is evident from the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos on the left that TMS’ design work has been put into practice along this section of the route.

“The Local Authorities have now implemented the off-road cycle route. It has made travelling within this area increasingly safer for cyclists and other road users”.

Comment from West Sussex County Council (2005)
