Research Projects

TMS has conducted a number of research projects involving accident and scheme analysis including the following:

• As part of a European project with partners in the Netherlands and France, we were contracted to research the effectiveness of treatments used to prevent pedestrian accidents. A database of 200 pedestrian accident treatments was compiled and analysed from a representative sample of seven local authorities.



• We worked with Leeds University on a European-funded project on the potential speed reduction benefits of telematics compared to conventional schemes. Our task was to gather information relating to speed reduction schemes and carry out cost-benefit analysis.



• We have developed a research database for our own use that monitors the effectiveness of accident remedial measures implemented throughout the country over the last ten years. The information on over 1000 schemes has been collected from local authorities. You can download a summary of latest findings from our Free Information page.

Product Evaluation

In order to evaluate the safety benefits of specific products, we carry out research on behalf of manufacturers of traffic and safety products.

For 3M, we monitored and evaluated the effectiveness of two products using "before and after" analysis of speed and accident data and video conflict studies at test sites.  

Manuals and Guides

We have produced manuals designed to act as a reference guide for those working in the road safety engineering field including RoSPA's Road Safety Engineering Manual and A Guide to Road Safety Engineering in Ireland.
