Martin is mainly involved in traffic management, transport assessments, road safety auditing, risk assessments and training for TMS.
Between 1971 and 1990 Martin worked for a number of local authorities where he carried out a variety of work in highway design and traffic engineering. His last local authority post was as Principal Traffic Engineer at Birmingham City Council where he was responsible for a group of 20 traffic engineers and technicians identifying, designing and implementing highway improvements, traffic management and local safety schemes
In January 1990, Martin and Steve Proctor set up TMS as an independent consultancy offering services in traffic engineering, road safety and training. In 2005, Martin stepped down from his management role as a Director and has since been an Associate with the company.
In addition to his managerial role at TMS, Martin has been involved in a wide variety of projects ranging from local safety schemes to giving advice to local authorities and central government departments.
Martin has carried out more than 1,200 road safety audits and currently runs about 30 training courses each year. He has been involved in producing Transport Assessments and more recently Travel Plans for new developments and existing businesses. He has given advice to a number of local authorities setting up and reviewing road safety audit procedures. Although projects have been mostly in the UK and Ireland, Martin has worked in Italy, Iceland, Belgium, Canada and Australia. He co-wrote "Practical Road Safety Auditing" in 2001 and its second edition in 2008.
Out of work, Martin completed the London Marathon in 2009 raising more than £5,000 for the Alzheimer's Society.
