Malcolm is involved in road safety auditing, accident investigation and site safety assessments, along with playing a leading role in the TMS training programme. He also works with UK and overseas clients in developing road safety policies.
Malcolm joined TMS in 1998 as an Associate following his previous role as the Traffic Management Policy Manager at Kent County Council. In the early 1970s Malcolm also became a founder member of the GLC's pioneering accident investigation and prevention organisation that helped to develop many of the safety engineering principals now in common use today.
Moving to Kent County Council in 1975 he set-up their safety engineering team, which over subsequent years, became renowned for its innovative work including the development and introduction of what is generally recognised as the World's first road safety audit process in 1984. Whilst at KCC Malcolm was involved in the early development of many of the traffic calming principles now taken for granted. In the late 1980s and early 1990s as his personal management brief came to involve a broader spectrum of traffic issues he was involved with an intergovernmental working group linked to the Channel Tunnel project, working on bringing the Tour de France to England in 1994 and representing the County Surveyors Society on the National Cycle Network steering group.
At TMS, Malcolm has not only carried out over 500 road safety audits but he has been instrumental in assisting his colleagues in developing the company's national role in this essential aspect of safety engineering. He has also been involved in developing TMS's expertise in the area of site safety and operational safety assessments. Apart from his involvement in delivering courses in the TMS training portfolio, both in the UK and abroad, he has lectured on the complete spectrum of safety engineering issues in Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Portugal, Slovakia and South Korea. In several of these countries he has worked with national organisations in developing road safety audit procedures.
Outside of work, Malcolm edits a 60-page quarterly English-language magazine, with a circulation of some 1400 copies, which deals with railway (and public transport operations) in Switzerland. He also enjoys cycling, walking and tending his allotment.
